17 Thursday Nov 2011
I’m many miles high in the sky, somewhere between New York City and Houston, Texas, according to the sky map, over Louisiana. I fly Jet Blue because one can watch live t.v. in real time while flying coast to coast. On this day particularly I am grateful to have access to 24 hours networks. MSNBC’s signal is not penetrating the thick clouds, however CNN is. I would prefer to have the voice of the left accompanying me on this four hour trip to keep me well informed of the breaking events of the takeover of Zuccotti Park/Liberty Square today, 11-15-11.
My day began abruptly. I awoke from a very inefficient sleep at 5:30 a.m. and remained alert when I turned on the television and heard that our billionaire mayor had ordered the hostile takeover, the surprise attack, the big sweep, at 1 a.m., of the encampment, trying to deter the movement from what I believe is the imminent actions planned for Thursday, November 17th, 2011. Shocked, dismayed, utterly disgusted and on top of all that, realizing that of all days, I was heading away from this firestorm, into another kind, in a red state, presided over by a fading, embarrassed GOP presidential candidate. I would not be there to join the ranks of defenders and outraged 99%er’s, after all the time and energy that I have invested in this movement, not nearly as much as or as significant as many, but with the same heart and zeal as most.
So here on route in the sky southwestward bound, I can only do what I have not yet done during this past two months that have begun to change the world as we know it, and that is, I can write. I have used my most precious tool, the camera, to document as much as possible and I have not made time for pontificating on paper with my other tool, a keyboard full of letters and possibilities.
I feel quite helpless being away from the situation and sad that I can not contribute my energy today. I will not have the time nor the freedom in Houston to join their ranks, if there are any occupying anywhere at the moment. I hate that fact too.
So I will write my thoughts and feelings and hope to establish a voice to accompany my photos heretofore.
The latest news that CNN broadcast was that the police were ignoring a court order to allow the occupiers back in the park. They had the papers stating that it was unconstitutional. Yet there were still hearings happening at 2:30 e.s.t. and a final decision was to be rendered by 3:15 according to the correspondent. Somehow, I doubt that deadline will be met but I will stand by.
The thing is, this decision is perhaps the one we have been waiting for. The pivotal moment the uprising turns into a revolution of remarkable proportions. I’m not being or feeling overly optimistic, like Michael Moore giddily proclaimed last week at the “Occupy Everywhere” discussion at New York’s New School University.
Moore’s optimism of the future of the movement and the change he believes it will exact, was inspiring but not 99% convincing. He said, “our ship has sailed in”. This I completely concur with, but will the storm currently at sea, wreck it or will it find the right tidal wave of support to usher it safely to shore.
I surely hope for the latter. I hope that the visionaries who have stuck it out since nearly day one are not deterred, but determined. I hope that those who have dipped their toes in, will finally dive heart first into the daily actions. I hope that those who have been dedicated and have made their way to any occupation anywhere, will not feel defeated and embattled and scared and will continue to show up literally and figuratively often and as much as possible. I hope that those who still continue to ask, “what’s their central message?”, “what’s their demands?”, “will they go away when the going gets tough?” finally understand those answers loudly and clearly.
Those answers are continuous and constant. They are now, they are then and they are yet to come. They cannot and should not be defined so sharply just to enable those without imagination or vision to have something to respond to. They need to come up with their own queries and they need to continue to search for the answers, the truth, the ultimate shift in consciousness. That is the only true answer for me because to answer is finite, which means to neatly wrap things up and move along. NO! This is not something to rush, this is NOT something to push through like an agenda because it must be something that enables people to exercise their free will, from this day forward, for the betterment of all, not just a few.
If that is too difficult to grasp, then just turn a blind eye, turn the other cheek, and pretend like something greater than the sum of it’s parts has not already evolved. That is until it cannot be denied or ignored and then welcome to the party, welcome to the future!!!
